Historical Facts

Noordwijk enjoys a rich history. The seaside resort was given city rights in 1398, which were subsequently rescinded because it refused to build a fortress wall. In 1429 Noordwijk was officially named as a place of pilgrimage. Here the Scottish martyr Saint Jeroen was tortured and beheaded by the Normans in 856. The skeleton of this monk still lies in the St. Jeroens Church today. The village centres of Noordwijk aan Zee and Noordwijk Binnen put to mind the days of yore.
